GESSI

“We need to move,” Blaize’s voice rips me from a deep sleep.

I jolt upright in bed, my brain taking a few seconds to remember exactly where I’m at.

The orchard village, in a lodge, with Varian and River on either side of me.

I grip the sheet to cover my body as I focus on Blaize. He’s in full battle leathers, armed to the teeth with knives and his signature blaster, his silver arm winking in the low light flickering in the room.

“What’s happened?” I ask as Varian and River switch into assassin mode, leaping out of bed in search of their clothes.

Blaize cringes, spinning around. “That’s a whole lot of dick before breakfast,” he says, shaking his head.

“If you’re jealous, join us next time,” Varian teases while slipping into his fighting leathers.

Heat rushes over my body at the thought, but it’s quickly whisked away by the rigid way Blaize is standing, not to mention him barging into this room without a second thought. I hurry off the bed, digging through my pack for my own leathers, and sliding into them so Blaize can’t see the scars. They settle around me like a warm glove, the material supple yet strong, hugging my curves as my power crackles to life in my veins.

“What’s happening?” River asks, his signature red and black leather suit fitted to his body, all manner of gadgets strapped to his belt.

Blaize turns back around, eyes darting between each of us.

“Trince’s scouts spotted two of the general’s guards heading this way. They’re about fifteen minutes out.”

My blood runs cold. “Any sign of the general?”

“How do they know they’re the general’s guards?” Varian asks at the same time.

“No sign of the general,” Blaize answers me first. “The scouts say they’ve seen the standard uniform for the royal guards before.”

I bite my lip. I’d ordered all of my royal guards’ uniforms to be changed the second I came into power. I didn’t want them bearing the previous king’s or the general’s moniker on their chests anymore. Instead, they now wore leather as black as the ocean, with a simple night-blooming flower branding their right arms to show they work with me.

Unless, of course, you were in my elite assassin guard—like Varian, River, Blaize, and Crane—they wore whatever they chose and damn anyone who tries to tell them differently. But my Shattered Isle assassins under Lance’s command? They were proud to shed the general’s and king Jerrick’s marks and replace them with mine. It had been a testament to their support of their new queen, and it had touched me deeply.

Whoever is approaching the orchard village now must still wear the old uniforms for the scouts to have spotted them.

“Why would only two be heading this way?” I ask, shoving my feet into my boots. If the general had heard of my arrival here, wouldn’t he come with his entire army?

“Let’s go ask them,” Varian says, his eyes lighting up like a youngling on winter solstice.

“I agree,” Blaize says, nodding.

“I’m in,” River adds, opening the door and waving his arm toward Varian and Blaize.
